Solid wood, what is it and with what "it is eaten"

Buying wooden furniture for ourselves, we want to understand what we are buying:

  • how high-quality it is;
  • is it environmentally friendly;
  • how long it will serve us.

But sometimes when we come to a store or visit a website, we get not entirely clear information “made from solid wood”. What is it? Let's try to figure it out.
"Solid" oak, beech, ash or other wood is 100% natural raw material for the manufacture of goods. But there are some peculiarities. As we know, good wood material is rare, it has knots, air voids, which reduces its quality. Therefore, we will consider two types of solid wood: solid and glued, and also dwell on such a concept as lamella. You can use this information when choosing tables, chairs and other products to save your budget and determine a balanced price-quality ratio.

Solid array

Products are made from a whole piece of oak, beech, or other wood. These products are considered exquisite and the most expensive, their elite depends on the structure of the wood used in production. Any inclusions, the presence of knots and air bubbles, significantly devalue the furniture and reduce the time of its use.
Obviously, such solid pieces are not often found, the price of products made from them is not justifiably overstated and is available to a limited circle of consumers. The disadvantages of manufacturing this array is increased attention when drying raw materials: it can crack. Also, finished products are sensitive to air humidity: at high - moisture is absorbed, at low - the products dry out.
For this reason, wooden furniture made from another raw material, a board, is very popular now.

Glued solid wood

During wood processing, sawing out solid elements and removing defects, a lot of short is formed, which is not thrown away, spliced in length (spliced board), and is used in the furniture industry. Solid elements obtained at the previous stage of processing are called lamellas, which are glued together to form a "smooth fugue" and subsequently form a solid-lamellar shield. It is called furniture, or glued solid wood. Furniture is made from this raw material, which is much more durable than products from chipboard and MDF, but much cheaper than goods from a solid wood. The strength and stability of the glued mass is not inferior to the solid one, and in most cases even surpasses it in technical parameters.

Our factory "Ywood", observing all the rules for making a shield, produces it from solid lamellas, without joining them in length. Therefore, tabletops, cabinet furniture, beds, legs of chairs and tables are made only from solid wood, without splicing, which increases their quality and strength.

The Ywood company uses high-quality water-dispersion adhesives of European manufacturers, water resistance class D-3 and D-4. The adhesives are environmentally friendly and have an international quality certificate.

The total

Summarizing the material, we can say that solid wood occupies a leading position in strength and environmental friendliness among natural raw materials, and is not replaceable in furniture production. And what it is, glued or solid, you choose, based on your desires and capabilities.

Wood products are "alive", regardless of what raw materials they are made of. Like all living organisms, they are characterized by respiration. And they also need the same conditions for existence as all living things: optimal temperature and stable humidity. Buy solid wood furniture from Ywood and create a suitable microclimate, and they will serve you for a very long time.
